picture141Going to New York can bring you a hodge-podge of different emotions. Of course, you want to see and feel everything, and you want to feel welcome. It’s always better to feel welcome at a new place. Well, truth be told, New York isn’t actually the friendliest place in the world, but of course, you can still find nice and decent people to talk to.

If you’re a tourist, make sure that you go to the museums and other landmarks of the place. Sometimes, even the locals forget to appreciate the beauty of their own city.

Travelling in America

picture131When people go to the United States, they want to shop and of course, experience local culture. But the problem with most tourist guide books is that the places they banner about have nothing to do with the “real thing”. A tip for people who want to experience authentic local culture- go to the places where you don’t have to spend so much money.

Remember, culture is all about people and living with them and experiencing life with them. Culture is not about shirts, watches or DVDs. It’s about going out of your way to become part of something really special to the locals.

Everything’s fine in Sao Paolo

picture121Because Brazil has a wonderful way of subsidizing expenditures and supporting its citizens, people are quite fine with spending money on things like shampoos and manicuring sets. Even the smallest retailers of these products earn more than $200 a day just by selling the small products.

Talk about happiness amidst turmoil. If this is how Brazil is going to handle things amidst the problems in even the largest countries in the world, maybe we can take a page of Lula’s book and start supporting individuals. That way, this thing can make a nice 360-degree turn for the better.

Everything’s for sale with airlines

picture51With the current crunch in tow, the smaller airlines are thinking of ways to regain the money they’re losing to cutting ticket costs and lowering the basic fees associated with flying. One of the things that these airlines are doing right now is charging small, innocuous fees to things like using the plane’s small comfort rooms.

Also, airlines are opening small bars and other such convenient places to drink (and spend your money) in an effort also stem the tide of profit-loss. It seems that even the largest companies in the world are afraid of losing their jobs- permanently.

Elephants and mallets

picture41When we think of polo, we often think of prim and proper horses with royal crests, ridden by royalty wielding nasty-looking mallets. We also think of palaces, of demure gigantic fountains and a round, red ball being tossed about in the cleanly cut grass.

Well, don’t expect these things if you’re in Thailand and you’re playing elephant polo. Elephant polo is played the same way- but the only difference is you’ll be riding a behemoth ten times your size and weight, and when you’re thrown off, you’ll actually feel how it’s like to fall off one story from the ground.

Send your lover away!

picture31They say that if you really love someone, you should keep that person as close to you as possible. This is no longer true, as research suggests that travelling is actually one of the best ways to relax the body as well as the mind. So if you’re thinking of a perfect gift for your partner, why don’t you save a bit and put him or her to a plane headed to a relaxing spot in the Caribbean islands?

That’s the best way you can show just how much you care- by wanting him to feel relaxed and comfortable, away from work.

No overweight baggage anymore, please

picture26Since everyone is cutting costs around the world (especially in the United States) people are warned that the fines for overweight baggage will double or triple in the coming months. Even low-cost airlines will be charging hefty fines to people who don’t seem to realize what “carry-on” baggage really means.

If you want to bring lots of stuff, make sure that you tag them properly and pay the baggage fee. This is the only way to avoid the annoying $30 or more in fines; just pay the fees up front, so you won’t have to deal with irate airline people later after you arrive, or before you ride the plane.

Los Angeles is hot, hot, hot!

picture110We’re not only talking about the movie stars and other banal things about LA, we’re talking about thee fact that for a few extra bucks, you can explore and enjoy the hot springs in Los Angeles. That’s right, if you have the extra time (and finances) to go to Angelenos for a nice sojourn with one of the most therapeutic things on earth: hot springs.

And yes, don’t bother asking people about the place because it really does exist and has actually been around for quite a while. It’s like a spot of the tropical countries- right here in LA.

Bring home Indonesian culture

picture25As tourists, we always want to bring home something that would remind us of the wonderful time we spent in a foreign country. That’s why in Indonesia, a wonderful shop called Alun-Alun is open to all tourists who want to take home a part of the rich cultural heritage that the large archipelagic formation has to offer.

Aside from the usual key chains and shirts, the wonderful shop also offers distinct recycled bags and other such eco-friendly products at equally friendly prices. If you want authentic Indonesian art at a price that’s friendly, go to Alun-Alun.

Lovely seascapes in South Carolina

picture24If you remember that romantic movie “The Notebook” then you might be thinking, where in the world did they shoot that movie? It’s as if movie makers have this knack of finding the most secluded and unpolluted spots in the country for their own purpose.

Fortunately, now we know that they actually shot that movie in a pristine island that can be found near South Carolina. If you’re thinking of going there, then you’re in luck- you can actually take a ferry and absorb the beauty of nature from the island. And maybe, just maybe, you can retrace the steps of Ryan Gosling.
